MacDowell Downtown: Journalist Azmat Khan
April 6 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
New York Times Magazine contributing writer Azmat Khan (MF 18) will talk about her book project and its “ground-level investigation of the U.S.-led air war” in Iraq and Syria at the next edition of MacDowell Downtown. Khan, who has reported on the U.S.-led coalition airstrikes and their civilian casualties since early 2016, will discuss her reporting, the people she’s met along the way, and the way the military views the airstrikes. She’ll also present photographs of the landscape and people trying to go about their lives in devastating circumstances. The author, who has a master’s in women’s studies from the University of Michigan, says she hopes the the information she’s uncovered and the narratives of three families she presents in the book fill “in lots of gaps in the details” on the U.S.-led air war.
Khan has also spent a year reporting in Pakistan and worked at “PBS Frontline” for three years before breaking into The New York Times Magazine. She is also a Future of War Fellow at New America and Arizona State University. Her NYT Magazine story, “The Uncounted,” which is based on her work in Iraq an Syria, won the 2018 National Magazine Award for reporting.
MacDowell Downtown is free to all and the doors at the Monadnock Center for History and Culture open at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
